Water is certainly the most precious gift bestowed on the living beings by Mother Nature. Water, a requirement worldwide, also acts as a competent source of essential minerals for our body. However, the minerals available in water may differ from place to place, and not all the minerals are good for health. While minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium are good for our wellbeing, presence of minerals like lead and arsenic in drinking water could be dangerous.

 

Essential Minerals in Water

Our body needs essential minerals for its adequate growth and development. In fact, good minerals also result in strong teeth, bones, hair and healthy skin. Minerals like calcium, magnesium and sodium are generally found in drinking water. According to BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), the required mineral content in drinking water should be Calcium 75mg/l, Potassium31.1 mg/l, and Magnesium 30mg/l respectively.

Calcium (Ca) – This, frequently found mineral in drinking water, is beneficial for our teeth and bones, for blood coagulation, and for proper functioning of nervous system. Drinking water, with no calcium or less calcium, can add to the risk of coronary diseases, bone fractures in children, sudden death in infants, and can also lead to pregnancy-related disorders.

Magnesium (Mg) – Along with sodium and calcium, magnesium is also one of the commonly found minerals in drinking water. Besides aiding the immune system and blood cell turnover, magnesium is also crucial for many metabolic functions, muscular and nervous activities.

Sodium (Na) – Sodium is crucial for balancing the electrolyte and water in our body. It is also necessary for the proper functioning of our cardiac system and nervous system. Since human diet is generally rich in sodium, it is advised to consume water which has sodium content less than 20mg/l.

How Do Minerals Occur in Water?

The mineral concentration in drinking water is quite complex, and basically depends on the landing of water on the earth. The water that we drink generally comes from the ground water below the soil. As we all know, the Earth gets water in the form of rain and snow. When that water passes through soil, it gets mineralized. With the invasion of pollution, the soil has become impure through toxic waste and garbage. And when the water comes in contact with this soil, it gets the contaminants and impurities along with the minerals. And for that reason, the tap water is unfit for direct consumption and it is necessary to remove the impurities of drinking water through the process of water purification.

How to Purify the Tap Water?

Generally, RO purification is regarded as the best water purification process to get pure and healthy water. However, this is not 100% true.  RO water purifiers typically eliminate the naturally occurring minerals of the water providing the pore size of RO membrane is so small that only pure water molecules can pass through it. To resolve this problem, one must look for a RO water purifier that has TDS controller so that the water retains the required mineral content. Over and above, water purifiers with UV purification are better as they remove all the germs and bacteria from the water, ensuring that you get only pure water.
